Makahiki 2021

Makahiki 2021 - Week 10

Once the statue of Lono had completed is tour around the island, he was returned to his home in the heiau. The ali’i nui (high chief) would set out on a canoe that evening and return the following morning.

Upon his return, he would need to defend himself against a spear thrown by a waiting warrior. If he thwarted the spear successfully, he proved himself a strong and deserving ruler to his people.

This ceremony was called a kāliʻi. The kāhuna would then perform their own ceremony and after a sacrifice had been made, the white kapa used to signal the beginning of Makahiki, was taken down. This signaled Makahiki season was coming to a close.

This week we will be donating 10% of sales to Project Hawai'i Inc. Project Hawai'i Inc. is on a mission to enhance the lives of homeless and poverty stricken children, helping them to escape their cycle of poverty. They provide services year round on the islands of Hawai'i and O'ahu.  You can learn more about their mission at: https://www.helpthehomelesskeiki.org
